Family Employee Resource Group: Alternative Schooling Options- Homeschooling, Online Schooling, and Charter Schools

Event Description

Are you considering alternative schooling options for your child outside of the K-12 public school system? Join the WorkLife Office as we present Alternative Schooling Options to help provide resources and information in this area. We are proud to be joined by Kevin Walters and Tammy Hatfield, from the Michigan Department of Education, as well as Carolyn Taylor of Graduation Alliance to provide up to date information regarding the process and options around home schooling, online schooling, and charter schools.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn about the home schooling process, benefits, and support systems.
  • Learn about charter schools, what are they, and how they are different from  traditional K-12
  • Learn about programs that partner with your current K-12 school to offer online options as an alternative
  • Attendees will be provided time to ask questions of the presenters

About the Speaker: Kevin Walters, Michigan Department of Education

Kevin Walters supervises the Grants Unit for the Michigan Department of Education. In addition to state and federal grant programming, the Unit handles all procurement for the Department, as well as registration and approval of nonpublic, boarding, and home schools. Kevin is a long-time educator, including time as a teacher, administrator and school superintendent in Michigan prior to joining the Department.

About the Speaker: Tammy Hatfield, Michigan Department of Education

Tammy Hatfield Manages the Public School Academies Unit for the Michigan Department of Education. The unit works with all charter schools in the state of Michigan to review charter contracts and amendments, request and issue charter school and district codes, and conduct verification visits with state authorizers. The team collaborates with authorizers and the management organizations to promote and provide quality choice options for students.
Tammy is a long-time educator who has been a classroom teacher, an administrator, and a district literacy trainer before joining the Department of Education.

About the Speaker: Carolyn Taylor, Vice President of Program Development, Graduation Alliance

Carolyn Taylor is the VP of Program Development at Graduation Alliance. She has over twenty (20) years of experience in education technology and education services She leads program development in Ohio and Michigan and has successfully implemented dropout recovery and prevention programs in partnership with education service centers, school districts and community colleges. She has been instrumental in expanding Graduation Alliance’s programs for over eight (8) years. Before joining Graduation Alliance, Carolyn held leadership roles at InsideTrack, ConnectEDU and Hobsons. Carolyn earned a BSBA and a MBA from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. She resides in Terrace Park, Ohio with her husband, son and precocious Goldendoodle.
