Crisis on Capitol Hill: Supporting Colleagues in Turbulent Times
Date: 1/8/21
As people who value strong community and equitable practices, we too condemn the misleading rhetoric and destructive behavior recently seen on Capitol Hill.
President Stanley issued a statement denouncing the insurgency on Capitol Hill on Wednesday. We at the WorkLife Office echo his sentiments, and we are here to support you as unprecedented events unfold in our world.
As people who value strong community and equitable practices, we too condemn the misleading rhetoric and destructive behavior recently seen on Capitol Hill. We also recognize how the response to the disruptions illustrates the differential treatment of our citizens – peaceful, diverse participation in Black Lives Matter protests elicited violence, while violent insurrection by largely white dissidents elicits minimal protection.
We recognize and encourage our community of leaders and supervisors to acknowledge and honor the overwhelming, distracting emotions that arise as we already cope with so much in our world today. Flexibility, authenticity, honesty and compassion are needed; patience and caring as we react and cope in different ways. We must pursue truth, and stay grounded in the principles and values beyond ourselves that foster the greater good of all, for the benefit of each of us.
And at the same time, we need to take care of ourselves and one another, making sure we bring our focus to healthy activity, tune out the chatter and tune in to our inner voices and guidance. We must each be the best we can be, to overcome our divisions and maintain our democracy, and our wellbeing together as one community.
Please stay safe, follow precautions and take time to reflect on what kind of community we can build together. Reach out to worklife@msu.edu if we can be of any assistance. Honoring work and personal lives is our business, and you are our #1 concern.
