Black History Month – Focus on Black Families

In honor of Black History month, we have showcased our most recent collection of activities surrounding Black families. We stand with the community, working together and individually to learn, to share, to grow and support growth in navigating the work and personal lives of the people we serve. Our goal is to continue to attract and retain excellent faculty and staff, and to create a community where all can be successful.
While this particular feature highlights Black families, we have dedicated this newsletter to present a series of related events, recordings and resources in each of our five focus areas; family, community, research, workplace and career. We are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in everything that we do. This month is an annual celebration of Black voices in our community and our workplace. Let us celebrate together!

- MLK Celebration Stuff the Library event raised 150 books, $4031 donations, approximately 50 schools will benefit.
February 11 – How to Talk to your Kids about Race – A Family Affinity Group Series Session
How To Talk to Your Children About Race will help parents and other caregivers explore race and racism and its impacts on children. The presentation will include conversations about why engaging with children around race is critical. Participants will learn some strategies and tips for beginning to have dialogues about race with their children.
Objectives:
- Learn about racism and its effects on children and families.
- Learn why engaging with children about race and racism is critical for all parents.
- Learn strategies to engage your child in dialogues about race and racism.
Presenters from MSU Extension Children & Youth
- Vivian Washington is an educator with MSU Extension. In the past 16 years, she has provided programming expertise in the areas of Financial Capability, Nutrition, Pre and Post Purchase Housing, Parenting, and Early Childhood Education.
- Kylie Rymanowicz is an Extension Educator with Michigan State University Extension specializing in child and family development and early childhood education. Kylie is a Certified Family Life Educator and her passions include social emotional health and mindfulness and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
