Why were you attracted to MSU?

I was attracted to MSU because of stimulating working atmosphere, the endless opportunities available for faculty members, and the great people that work at MSU.

What makes MSU a special place?

For me, I appreciate having the freedom of opportunities available at MSU and the collaborative working atmosphere with the faculty and staff.

What are some of your favorite places in East Lansing or the Capitol Region?

I usually run 3 or 4 days a week on campus at 6 a.m. before going to my office…for me running through campus and the East Lansing area early in the morning, whether it is a frigid February morning with fresh snow on the ground or an early spring morning, is wonderful. Our entire campus is a beautiful place during all 4 seasons especially early in the morning.

What is your favorite thing to do with your partner and or family on campus?

Without a doubt…going to the Dairy Store and the Children’s Garden.

What are some of the highlights of your academic experience at MSU? (eg teaching, research, community outreach, collab, etc)

A few that come to my mind: Being selected as a Lilly Teaching Fellow; Being recognized by my peers for the Teacher-Scholar Award and having my family at the awards ceremony; Working in the Graduate School developing and evaluating programs to assist students meet their career and professional development objectives; Watching students learn during study abroad programs in Kenya and the Bahamas; Seeing students I’ve worked with, both undergraduates and especially graduate students, become successful and happy working in the field wildlife ecology and management; Seeing the results of research projects being used to affect policy (e.g., the Farm Bill) or natural resources management decisions.

What else should new faculty know?

Working at MSU is a tremendous opportunity that will also present many challenges. I’ve found that many times meeting or conquering these challenges will present you with new opportunities. Become immersed in the MSU community and don’t isolate yourself as you tackle your new responsibilities. And, remember your academic career is more like a marathon (26.2 mi.) than a 5K road race (vs. 3.1 mi.)…you need to find a sustainable rhythm or pace you can maintain over the long haul to be productive and happy. Some miles will be harder than others but you have to find a way to get through those—often what will help you is the experience of others; support from family, friends, or colleagues; the diversion of a hobby; or just hard work.
